The Admiral’s Cove East Golf Course “Celebrates” a new look

The Club at Admiral's Cove has renovated the East Golf Course to use Celebration Bermudagrass™, a drought-tolerant turf. The grand opening was Nov. 18 and the course will be open to the members the latter part of November.

admirals_cove_027.gifCelebration will remain green longer than other turf varieties in drought conditions and has been rated the highest in divot recovery studies, which makes it a favorite among golf course superintendents.

"I chose to get away from Tifway419 and go with Celebration Bermuda because of its growth characteristics," said Bill Brousseau, director of golf course maintenance at Admiral's Cove. "Its vigorous growth and strong recuperative powers are essential at Admiral's Cove due to lots of cart traffic. I also like the fact that it has great color, is more resistant to insect and disease pressure and has better shade and cold tolerance than 419."

Brousseau was sold on the performance and aesthetic benefits of Celebration by Rick Goldenberg, co-chairman of the Green Committee at Admiral's Cove and master gardener. Brousseau and Goldenberg researched Celebration's performance at different golf courses in Florida including: The Country Club of Florida, Palm Beach Country Club and Indian Creek Country Club.

"Members will love it. It looks more like bentgrass than any other grass I've seen," said Goldenberg. "While drought tolerance was a major concern, we also wanted a grass that performs well in wet conditions. The common alternative, Paspalum, tends to hold moisture. Celebration doesn't. It's much smoother, which allows the water to run off."

Admiral's Cove is a private recreational country club in Jupiter, Fla. The Admiral's Cove East Golf Course is being redesigned by the architectural firm of von Hagge, Smelek, and Baril. They have made the course more challenging and more playable for all levels of golfers.
