Our Grass Is Green

Sod Solutions has been in the “green” business since 1994.  Part of our company’s mission is to better the environment through the development, licensing, marketing, and on-going research seeking out the next generation of improved turfgrass varieties.  Improved varieties are those that have been bred or selected from strains of grasses with unique characteristics that give them an advantage over others and make them more “Earth friendly.”  Here are some ways our grasses do their part to protect the planet.

 (Green Glossary)

     Our grasses

need fewer inputs.  Inputs include water, fertilizer, pesticide, fungicide and mowing.  Each of these can have a negative impact on the environment.  Water is quickly becoming a valuable commodity, especially in the southern United States, where a severe drought has been a persistent problem over the last five years.

EMPIRE Turf and Celebration are two of our turf varieties that have exceptional drought tolerance.  With these two varieties, the water supply can be shut off for an extended period of time without permanently harming the grass.  Our St. Augustine collection has outstanding drought resistance which means when the water is shut off, the grass will hold onto its green color for a longer period of time.

Fertilizer, pesticide and fungicide can be harmful to humans and wildlife if used in excess.  Sod Solutions grasses use less fertilizer and need less pesticides and fungicides.  Also, a number of Sod Solutions grasses like Bella Bluegrass and Captiva St. Augustine need less mowing.  Reduction in mowing cuts down on fuel consumption and carbon emissions.

Our grasses

reduce heat islands.  The heat island effect refers to surface temperatures in urban areas being higher than rural areas because grass, vegetation and shade from trees have been replaced by concrete.  Turfgrass has a natural cooling effect on the environment.  In fact, the front lawns of eight typical houses have about 70 tons of air conditioning capacity.  The average home’s air conditioner has a three or four ton capacity.*

Our grasses

neutralize carbon emissions by producing oxygen.  A typical lawn converts enough carbon dioxide from the atmosphere to provide adequate oxygen for a family of four.  In fact, one acre of grass produces more oxygen per year than one acre of rainforest.*

Our grasses

serve as a natural ground filter.  Turfgrass provides enhanced entrapment and biodegradation of synthetic organic compounds.* On top of their filtering characteristics, our grasses also help control erosion and serve as a buffer to fire.

Sod Solutions turfgrasses are user friendly by design.  But more importantly, they are environmentally friendly.  Our grasses require fewer inputs and include many added features that make them beneficial to the environment, and most of all, make them….GREEN.
